It is common for institutions to have email systems that block emails to learners from unknown sources. Often, the email that you can send to learners via Compass+, with their unique Future Skills Questionnaire link in it, can get blocked.
To avoid this happening, if you haven’t done so already, we recommend that you ask your IT Manager to allow (whitelist) the careersandenterprise.co.uk domain to send emails to your learners.
This article explains what to do if your FSQ link emails are being blocked, preventing your learners from receiving them.
Please note: You will only see the Email Health Status page referenced below if we have detected a problem with you sending the FSQ link to learners via email.
1. Log in to Compass+ with your email address and password - https://auth.careersandenterprise.co.uk/compassplus
2. Click on Learner > Email Health Status in the navigation bar:
3. This page contains a table showing the domains that your learner emails belong to:
There are two types of domains shown:
- Managed – with a white background
- Non-managed – with a dark grey background
Managed domains are those that should be controlled by your institution, normally whoever manages your IT systems, your IT Manager for example.
Non-managed domains cannot be controlled by your institution and usually belong to email service providers, Gmail, Hotmail for example. These are shown for your information only.
4. Each managed domain has a health status, these are explained in the table below:
Status | Description | Result |
Undecided | Compass+ doesn’t have enough information to decide if your email system is allowing you to receive emails from us. | You can still send emails, but they will be delivered slowly. |
Good | Compass+ can see that nearly all of the emails we are sending to your learners are being received. | You can send emails normally. |
Poor | Compass+ has detected that most of the emails that are sent to your learners are blocked. | You cannot send emails until this is resolved. |
5. If one or more of your domains has a Poor email health status, a warning message will display on screen. In the FSQ section, you may see one or both these warnings:
- “Before sending emails to learners, you must visit the Email health status page to resolve problems with the domain(s) that your learner emails belong to.”
-
“Some of the emails you have sent have been queued because you need to resolve problems with the domain(s) that these learner emails belong to.”
What to do to if an email domain has a Poor email health status
1. Go to the Email Health Status page
2. Click the ‘Generate Advice’ button in the ‘Advice for IT Manager’ column. This will provide you with a template email for you to send to your IT Manager:
3. Copy and paste the text into an email and send to your IT Manager, or the person who is responsible for managing the email system in your institution.
4. When your IT Manager has confirmed that they have updated your institution’s email system to allow incoming emails from the CEC, tick the Verified tick box:
5. Click the ‘Send tests’ button in the Actions column. This will send five test emails to random learners whose emails had previously been blocked:
The email they receive will be from you and will look like this:
If these emails are not blocked, the health status will change to Good and you can start sending FSQ links to learners via email again.
If your IT Manager does not control the domain that your learner emails belong to, tick the ‘Not Managed by School’ tickbox, then click the ‘Read Advice’ button in the Actions column:
A dialog box will open with the following text:
"Your school has students with emails that belong to this domain that you do not manage. We have tried sending emails to this domain but they have been rejected.
To send emails to this domain you will need to identify the owner and contact them. Your IT Manager should be able to help you to do this.
Once you have identified them, please ask them to allow the domain careersandenterprise.co.uk to send emails to this domain. Then you can untick 'Not Managed by School', tick 'Verified' and send test emails."
