What are Custom groups?
Custom groups are a great way of managing targeted careers provision. You can create Custom groups for any number of pupils (including single pupils), and they can also include pupils from different year groups.
For instance, you might want to create a Custom group for a science club, for the Student Council, or for students interested in a particular sector or destination.
Once you’ve created the Custom group, it’s easy to then add it to any new activities you create - you won’t have to enter all the pupils individually each time.
Viewing your Custom groups
To view your groups in Compass+, click on Plans > Manage Groups in the navigation bar:
All of your groups are listed here, including Year, Form, Teaching and Characteristics, and Custom groups. You can view all your Custom groups (black lozenges) by using the dropdown filter above the groups panel:
Creating a new Custom group
To create a new custom group, click the Create a new group button located in the top right of the screen:
A pop-up window asks you to give the new Custom group a name and add pupils to it. You can use the checkbox filters to help you find the pupils you wish to add:
You can also specify group membership start and end dates. Once a pupil’s membership expires, they will automatically be removed from the group:
Once you’ve added your pupils to your new Custom group, click Save:
Your new Custom group will then appear in your Custom group list.
Creating an activity for your Custom group
You can now create an activity specifically for your Custom group. To do this, create a new activity in the usual way (if you are unsure about creating activities, please see How to create an activity (GB2-8).
When you reach the section ‘Add groups of individuals to this activity’, search or use the group filter to find your new Custom group. When you have found your Custom group, click on it and the group will be assigned to your new activity:
Once your new activity is saved, it will be displayed in the Activity tab data in the individual profiles of the pupils within the Custom Group. Further activities for the same Custom group can be created in the same way.
Editing and deleting a pupil from a Custom group
To edit or delete a pupil from a Custom group, find the Custom group in the Manage Groups list, then click on the pencil icon in the Actions column:
You can also edit the Custom group name. Extra pupils can be added by clicking on the chevron beside the names of the current pupils and adding further pupils from the dropdown list:
To delete a pupil(s) from the Custom group, click on the ‘X’ next to their name or in the membership panel:
Once you have edited your Custom group, make sure to save it by clicking on Save changes:
