What are Custom groups?
Custom groups are a great way of managing targeted careers provision. You can create Custom groups for any number of learners (including single learners), and they can also include learners from different year groups.
For instance, you might want to create a Custom group for a science club, for Student Council, or for learners interested in a particular industry, sector or destination.
Once you’ve created the Custom group, it’s easy to then add it to any new activities you create - you won’t have to enter all the learners individually each time.
Viewing Custom groups
1. Log in to Compass+ using your email address and password - https://auth.careersandenterprise.co.uk/compassplus
2. From the main navigation bar go to Activities > Groups:
3. All of your groups are listed here. Use the 'Group type' filter to view a range of groups you have created, including preset filters for Teaching Group, Year Group, Form and Characteristics. You can also use the search bar to search for a particular group:
Creating a new Custom group.
1. Click the 'Create a new group button' located in the top right of the screen:
2. A pop-up window asks you to give the new Custom group a name and add learners to it. You can use the checkbox filters to help you find the learners you wish to add:
3. You can also specify group membership start and end dates. Once a learner's membership expires, they will automatically be removed from the group.
ETF (Effective Transitions Fund) Phase 2 schools only! Please continue to Step 4 if this does not apply. If you are participating in ETF Phase 2, you will need to follow the steps above to create an ETF Phase 2 Custom group adding all of the learners who are participating in the Effective Transitions phase 2 programme. When you get to Step 2, once you have added learners to the group, please ensure that you also tick this box: Please note: Only create one ETF-related Custom group and ensure that the ETF Custom group is kept up-to-date with learners who join or leave the ETF programme. The Effective Transitions Fund programme may be referred to differently in your area. Please check with the school contact responsible for this programme if you are not sure if the Custom group you are creating is for the Effective Transitions Fund. If the Effective Transitions programme is referred to differently in your area, the principles detailed in this guidance still applies. If you create other Custom groups, based on learner interests for example. and add learners who are on the ETF phase 2 programme, you DO NOT have to tick the ETF tickbox again. |
4. Once you’ve added your learners to your new Custom group, click the green 'Save' button.
5. When you filter all your Groups by Custom group, your new Custom group will appear in your Custom group list:
Creating an activity for your Custom group.
You can now create an activity specifically for your Custom group. To do this, create a new activity in the usual way (if you are unsure about creating activities, please see How to create an activity (GB2-8).
When you reach the section ‘Add groups of individuals to this activity’, start typing the name of the group, use the search function or use the group filter to find the Custom group. When you have found the Custom group, click on it and the group will be assigned to the new activity:
Once your new activity is saved, it will be displayed in the Activity tab data in the individual profiles of the learners within the Custom Group. Further activities for the same Custom group can be created in the same way.
Editing and deleting a learner from a Custom group.
To edit or delete a learner from a Custom group, find the Custom group in the Manage Groups list, then click on the pencil icon in the Actions column:
You can change the Custom group name, or add extra learners by clicking on the down arrow at the side of the 'Add learners or groups to your custom groups' box, alternatively start typing a learners name and select them from the list.
To delete a learner(s) from the Custom group, click on the ‘X’ next to their name or in the membership panel.
